I really like Ubuntu. It connects to my wireless pretty much as soon as I log in, and was no effort at all with drivers (unlike XP). Sadly I have no reason to use linux over XP, so my ubuntu partition hasn't been used recently. That said, I do admire the whole package manager/repositories/apt thing.

Hello,
I have had similar problem and read all that I could (boring beyond endurance).
My feeling about it is best explained by an analogy. When the cure for the tuberculosis was not known, there were litteraly millions of explanations as to its causes and remedies - very much like the cancer in our times.
To make the story short, not giving benefit of doubt, I decided that this is one main area Linux apes Microsoft, i.e., make money which, by the way, is the most powerful God ever existed in the history of mankind. And I think that Linux developpers should drop their boastful pretentions and admit their ploy. If they had spent even one hour in front of their PC they would see millions upon millions pages and forums of goose chase recommended by what Nietzsche called overly excited agile monkeys.
Developpers’ message: “Keep them busy!”
Defenders’ message: “You must fight to keep alive!”
My message to the developpers: “Hic Rhodus!”

Well, there's always a way to do something. You just have to KNOW how to do it. Though it is frustrating when it says Makeinstall is not installed, I mean, why would they leave that out? Compling from source is part of what makes linux; linux. And yet there was no make insatall.

I too feel that linux without internet is useless. Even to install software that have nothing to do with the internet, requires net access. I have tried to download the tarball etc. on a different machine and install on Linux but boom, X requires Y package which in-turn requires Z and so on! How many files do I need to download to install a single piece of software??
Most ppl with net access would not have noticed that installing a single thing on linux (any flavour) downloads 10 other 'packages'!

I have tried many different Linuxes, including: openSUSE; Ubuntu; Kubuntu; Xubuntu; Freespire; PCLinuxOS; and (although only to revive an old laptop) Puppy Linux. All have managed to detect my hardware, although the best Ubuntu which made it VERY easy to install the driver for my graphics card (with which I had been having Problems). Linux is very good (especially in comparison to windows (which sucks!)) it is well worth it! keep looking for the solution!

Thanks for that. I'm loading the site right now.
I'm trying for the moment to stick to ubuntu as I have limited disk space, or I would try out PCLinux.
I shall add it to my list of stuff to look into, as if that list wasn't big enough already!

The main reason I wanted lin was because I heard about its auto download and install features, and I wanted to try it out first hand. Also I want to take the next year to get up to speed for uni. Sure knowing something about Linux will come in handy.

Cheers

Now, I don't use it to connect wirelessly, but I installed PCLinuxOS 2007 on a separate hard drive, and it installed EVERYTHING right off the disk I made from an ISO, and worked right out of the box!

Whether it will take care of your wireless woes, I don't know, but I find PCLinuxOS to be better than the much-touted Ubuntu. You can read about (and download) it here:
